Back To School

The Chess in Schools and Communities Charity is an integral part of the London Classic event and has made great strides in it’s short existence, having introduced an ever growing number of teachers in many schools.

In the spirit of this, I read in Chess Magazine that Malcolm Pein had made a visit to Scott Lake Elementary School in Miami, a school whose chess club has performed well in schools’ competitions at National level under chess coach Cheryl Polite and Principal Valerie Ward. As we were dodging the English winter with some holiday time in Florida after the LCC I asked him if it would be useful for me to do the same. Malcolm visited in May of 2011 along with Jeb Bush, Jr. through whom Malcolm had learned about this school and who also stopped by to watch my attempt. Malcolm had warned me that a couple of the students were quite strong: fortunately I did not get to find out as they had since graduated. The present batch of kids did keep me pretty busy however, both in terms of the chess and also from a physical point of view as the simul was a little hard on the knees as the boards in the middle had the lowest table I ever encountered in a simul, great for little ‘uns but a little tougher for me even though I’m not a giant!

I decided to demonstrate my game against Kotronias from 1992 hoping to inspire another generation of Marshall players!

It seemed to go down okay despite being played long before my audience was born. I then finished with the simul against the students. I brought over a 2010 London Classic program signed by all the players plus 2 impressive bonus signatures of Kasparov and Korchnoi to award for the best game which was secured by Davar Francois, congratulations Davar, keep up the good work!

Armageddon Cheesesteak

The World Open was the start of a busy chess period for me. It had been nice to get a break in our condo in Key Largo but with kitchen renovations, sunsets and cocktails, Chessbase didn’t get much of a look in!

Despite this, I managed quite well in the World Open winning a few decent games. However, Gata Kamsky convincingly beat me in our armageddon game to take the title. The game was 5 vs 3 minutes but with an additional 3 seconds delay, which was omitted in some reports. I think my colour choice of Black was okay but sadly if you play badly it doesn’t make much difference.

I hope they might use this same hotel again for the tournament, with good opportunities to sightsee at the Liberty Bell or the “Rocky” steps depending on your taste, and a great view of the 4th July celebrations. I can also recommend Pat’s King of Steaks for their Philly cheesesteak which sustained me through my very lengthy game with Vitali Golod in the seventh round.

For some reason my bank failed to credit my check to my account properly, thanks to Bill Goichberg for being very helpful reuniting me with my winnings.

Florida Hideaway

I have to confess I had a slight ulterior motive in playing the Chicago Open:  it put us in the right country to have a bit of holiday time at our condo in the Florida Keys afterwards! We really like the relaxed ‘island vibe’ of the area. it is a wonderful place to chill out, eating great seafood and doing the odd bit of snorkeling or fishing (although on our most recent fishing trip, between us we caught a grand total of zero fish! – well technically I caught a scorpion fish – which is not really what you’re looking for, (although it is better to encounter one when fishing than when swimming!) and Tara caught a fish so small it had to be returned from whence it came).

Notice the absence of fish on the end of the line!

We are always a bit sad on our last night in the Keys, so it’s best to go and watch the sunset with cocktails.
When I am sadly occupied with pesky chess games, we rent the condo out and if anyone is interested the website is www.condofloridakeys.com. Mention this website and we will make sure you get a good deal ;-)

Wish we were there...

Take me out to the Ballgame

Our first live baseball game, the Florida Marlins vs Milwaukee Brewers on 3rd June (played at the Miami Dolphins stadium – I think they are building a new baseball stadium), was very enjoyable and not just for the hot dogs and beer. One thing that was striking was the extreme ease with which the catches were taken. Steepling hits that would have challenged the fielders in cricket were repeatedly pouched with casual nonchalance – the gloves make a big difference. Clearing the fences wasn’t easy, several good looking connections just resulted in catches in the deep, although I think another game between the same teams a few days earlier finished 13-5. The stadium was pretty quiet throughout but suddenly erupted a few balls before the end of the game as the home team closed in on victory.  Oh and  I think it would be a good idea for Somerset to employ some cheerleaders!
